This proposed class structure follows the design of US university-level creative workshops and includes exercises and techniques used in teaching creative writing by Scott Ezell since 2010.

The class is designed to lead students step by step through a process of learning non-linear ways to process and conceptualize the world around them, and express their thoughts and perceptions in language. This is not to suggest that linear thinking is wrong, but learning to conceptualize relationships and dynamics in broader, more comprehensive ways, can help students become more complete as people and as citizens, even if their working life is in technology fields.

In this class, students will work both individually and collectively to write creatively, read each other’s work, and discuss the results. Students will focus their writing on personal objects from their own lives, using protocols developed for NYCU students in Dr. Sharon Ku’s classes in Spring 2022 and Winter 2022-23. The class will consist of four class periods of four hours each, and each class will include instruction, samples of work by published poets, and time for students to do their own writing.

There will be no exams, students will be graded by participation. All class work will be completed during the class meeting times. However, since the goal is for each student to complete a piece of writing before the start of Week 4, in order to produce a physical book in the final class meeting, students may need to do homework to make any further revisions in their pieces. They may also wish to check with the instructor before finalizing their writing. Scott Ezell will be available during his regular office hours to meet with students, or for individually scheduled appointments if students need to meet but cannot make the regular office hours.
